What is quality education? What ensures course effectiveness? Addressing such questions and finding accurate answers is crucial, especially because teaching and learning activities must be subject to regular evaluation. That is where DepEd plays an instrumental role by implementing significant policies and initiatives.
For instance, it introduced the MATATAG curriculum with the aim of improving the educational methods in higher educational institutes. Consequently, it led to a series of discernible changes, such as reduced subject load, emphasis on a learner-centered approach, etc.
But what is the MATATAG curriculum, and how does it add value to the Philippine education system? Let’s have a look:
What is the MATATAG Curriculum?
MATATAG stands for Makabansa (for the country), Akatao (for humanity), and Takalikasan (for God). The acronym’s overarching significance lies in pointing out the essential traits of a person who must be patriotic, humanitarian, spiritual, and environmentalist.
In essence, a MATATAG individual is a well-rounded individual who is committed to accomplishing goals and serving their nation, community, and planet. That is exactly what the MATATAG curriculum aims to do; its primary objective is to cultivate students with foundational skills and knowledge.
Consequently, it will prepare them to progress successfully to higher academic levels, making them more receptive and adept. Furthermore, the new curriculum has been developed specifically to address key issues in the previous K–12 curriculum framework.
For example, it reduces the overburdening of subjects and emphasizes basic learning capabilities and personalized learning. A major goal is to make the schooling process more student-oriented by catering to students’ requirements.
Sounds interesting, doesn’t it? Therefore, it is only fitting to explore the framework’s objectives:
Objectives of the MATATAG Curriculum
The Department of Education (DepEd) launched the MATATAG curriculum on August 10, 2023, and is being implemented phase-wise in the current year (2024-25). It pointed out a few objectives, which are as follows:
1. Improve student learning outcomes
The current national circumstances and global demands motivated DepEd to reform the basic educational curriculum by improving the teaching-learning standards. Likewise, changing the knowledge acquisition methods through relevant practices is equally important.
Therefore, the curriculum focuses on strengthening students’ mastery of core skills like reading, writing, and mathematical abilities. The National Reading Program (NLP) and the National Mathematics Program (NMR) provide necessary support to the curriculum and focus on developing literacy and numeracy.
Also, it aligns the learning competencies with learning’s developmental stages across various grade levels, fulfilling the cognitive demands of students as per their ages. In effect, it leads to improving the student learning outcomes as per the academic levels and ages.
2. Inculcate Relevant Skills
The curriculum acknowledges the urgency of establishing a skill-based education system by reinforcing essential literacy, numeracy, and subject-specific skills. Moreover, it incorporates a 21st-century skills framework, comprising four domains:
- Information, Media, and Technology Skills
- Learning and Innovation Skills
- Communication Skills
- Life and Career Skills
The framework ensures that students develop relevant competencies, enabling them to collaborate and communicate effectively in the modern world. Besides, 21st-century skills prepare them to solve problems through creative thinking and problem-solving capabilities.
3. Value-Based Education
Education without a sense of responsibility is incomplete; therefore, the new educational framework highlights values formation and peace. What’s more is that it promotes a strong sense of righteousness and a positive attitude.
Consequently, it encourages students to become advocates of community building and peaceful coexistence, helping to cultivate a sense of responsibility. Additionally, it will foster a sense of contributing to sustainable development.
4. Inclusive Education
Inclusive education will be central to the K–12 Basic Education Program, and it will include student-centric methodologies, developmentally appropriate practices, cultural sensitivity, etc. It will acknowledge the gender sensitivity and diverse social backgrounds of students.
Furthermore, it will foster an inclusive learning environment with the help of various programs such as:
- Programs for the Gifted and Talented: Comprehensive learning programs for talented learners at all basic education levels.
- Programs for Learners with Disabilities: Programs that cater to learners with disabilities.
- Madrasah Education Program: Culturally sensitive, Islamic-friendly educational opportunities for Muslim learners.
- Programs for Learners under Difficult Circumstances: Flexible programs for students facing circumstances such as illness, isolation, displacement, etc.
Key Features of the MATATAG Curriculum
1. Focus on Foundational Subjects
The MATATAG curriculum lays a strong emphasis on mathematics, science, and social studies, helping to strengthen the foundational knowledge. Furthermore, it will help foster a preparedness to learn STEM skills, which is crucial in today’s world.
Consequently, students will develop critical thinking, problem-solving, and analytical skills, ensuring their academic and professional success. On the other hand, MAPEH (Music, Arts, Physical Education, and Health), a core component of the curriculum, will play a significant role in the education system.
In fact, MAPEH promotes well-rounded development by nurturing students’ mental, emotional, physical, and social well-being. Also, it aims to introduce students to the Philippines' rich cultural heritage through arts, music, and physical activities.
2. Unique Pedagogical Approaches
The curriculum presents the Instructional Design Framework (IDF), which is a comprehensive guide for teachers to develop lessons. It encourages teachers to go beyond delivering lessons passively and create engaging learning lessons.
Furthermore, the framework puts students at the center of the learning process, whereas the teachers assume a facilitator’s role. Consequently, it allows teachers to employ diverse pedagogical approaches, ensuring students’ mastery of core concepts and competencies.
For example, they can leverage advanced tools like the learning management system to implement collaborative learning, inquiry-based learning, research-based approaches, etc.
3. Improved Assessment Methods
Shifting from the traditional examination mechanism to strategic assessments is essential to evaluating student learning and progress effectively. Therefore, DepEd emphasized that assessments should be holistic and authentic to assess essential learning competencies. Therefore, the curriculum directs the implementation of assessments in the following ways:
- Assessment for Learning: Continuous formative assessments to monitor student progress, determine learning needs, and provide timely feedback.
- Assessment as Learning: Encouraging learners in self-assessment and reflection processes, helping to develop metacognition skills.
- Assessment of Learning: Summative assessments that measure student achievement against learning standards.
4. Personalized Learning for All
Besides inclusive education, MATATAG ensures that learners can access and learn through personalized learning environments. This way, each student’s learning style, progress, and pace are acknowledged to foster a healthy learning environment.
How Will the MATATAG Curriculum Benefit Students?
The MATATAG curriculum ensures that students develop basic literacy and numeracy skills, offering them the right balance of academic and extracurricular activities. Furthermore, it aims to make the learning process more dynamic, flexible, and focused on students’ diverse learning needs.
